In 2017 James Ashwell decided to escape his hectic life in the city and set sail for the Caribbean on Oyster 62 Uhuru. The call of adventure proved stronger than expected – six and a half years later, he hasn’t looked back. We caught up with him after his latest epic voyage exploring remote Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea.
When we last spoke to James Ashwell, he was looking forward to exploring French Polynesia while waiting for the cyclone season to pass. We caught up with him to find out what he and the crew of Oyster 62 Uhuru have been up to over the last few months.
After over a year locked down in New Zealand, Oyster 62 Uhuru is heading home. We caught up with her owner, James Ashwell, in Tahiti at the end of the first leg. Back in March 2020, at the start of the pandemic, James made the decision to remain in New Zealand with Uhuru, based on the deep connection he has built with her after sailing halfway around the world together.
When James Ashwell and his friends set out from the UK to head to the Caribbean, they had no plans to go any further. But as Matthew Sheahan discovered, this turned out to be just the start and a much bigger trip was now on their minds.
