ARC Start – Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

Las Palmas, Gran Canaria

The ARC is a classic race that takes participants across the Atlantic Ocean in fantastic company. With cruising and racing classes to choose from, there is an ARC route for every sailor. For many Oyster World Rally participants, it is the warm-up to their adventure of a lifetime, and the first leg of the journey undertaken before beginning the Rally in Antigua.

A vibrant social and shore activity programme in Las Palmas provides the opportunity to join in with the build-up to the event with other participants, meet fellow members of the Oyster Family, as well as other like-minded sailors and soak up the atmosphere.

Preparing to sail across the Atlantic is a massive feat, with extreme responsibility placed upon owners and crew to ensure their yacht is ready before departure. While preparing for the crossing in Las Palmas, Oyster owners joining the ARC and ARC+ can take advantage of our excellent support system, delivered by the Technical Support Team on the ground.

The team is made up of Oyster experts, skippers and experienced sailors, who provide complimentary health checks and passage advice to the Oyster Family. They’re well-equipped to help owners with all aspects of their yachts, including engineering, systems and rigging, and ensure that each yacht is fully prepared and at peak operating performance before setting off on the 2700 nautical mile crossing.

The Atlantic crossing takes approximately three weeks, but time at sea is dependent on the fickle Tradewinds and some skippers claim to have completed the race in as little as 16 days. The ARC finishes on the stunning Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia, where participants are warmly welcomed into a tropical paradise renowned for its pristine white beaches, volcanoes and luxury resorts.

A sincere thanks to the team for their pre-ARC inspection aboard Kari of Lymington. No stone was left unturned and it was great to have such knowledgeable folk aboard, and to be reassured that Kari is in good shape.
Andy & Caroline Wells, Owners of Oyster 46 Kari of Lymington
We were delighted to have three (technical support team) on board. As the Owner and chief mechanic it is beneficial to have fresh pairs of eyes pointing out stuff that is known to be a challenge at times, but easy to overlook. We found a few things for my ‘to do’ list and the team addressed quite a few items, offering their support and help to fix and solve the issues.
Nigel Martin, Owner of Oyster 72 Clarelsa
It was very reassuring to have the rig and major systems, like the steering and generator, thoroughly checked by Oyster experts before departing for our first ocean crossing in our new Oyster 595. A huge thanks to the Oyster Technical support team.
Andy Heppel, Owner of Oyster 595 Carina
Thanks so much for this - the team were brilliant and we were not expecting this service, so we are even more delighted. Having real experts spend so much time and say our boat is ok is worth a great deal.
Keith and Laura Bradley, Owners of Oyster 46 Fisk
Thanks to the whole team for all their help and advice in Las Palmas, it really sets Oyster apart from the rest!
Joe Sowton, Owner of Oyster 54 Ostara
It's a truly amazing service, and free of charge! The team was so helpful and their knowledge was outstanding. True customer service at a very high level.
Ian & Fiona Patience, Owners of Oyster 56 Asante
