INTRODUCING

Reunion

Reunion is a magical island that lies 550km east of Madagascar, known for its beautiful rain forests and mountains, volcanic landscapes and coral reefs.

A destination for lovers of the outdoors, indulge in your favourite activities from hiking to paragliding, canyoning, mountain biking, white water rafting and diving. The iconic Piton de la Fournaise rises above the island. This active volcano offers a challenging but rewarding trek and climb. The island is a melting pot of cultures, influenced by Africa, Europe, China and India. French and Créole are the main languages with English widely spoken as well. In 2010, the island was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and covers almost 40% of the island's area and coincides with the central zone of the Réunion National Park.

Highlights

  • The iconic landmark of the Piton de la Fournaise, a climbable active volcano at 2,632 metres high. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, erupting regularly.
  • If you are the active, outdoors type, there are helicopter trips, canyoning, white water rafting and much more to throw yourself into.
  • Take a cruise along the world’s most expensive road. The Route Nationale 1 runs for 13km along the coast. It is estimated to have cost 1.6 billion euros to build – that is 133 million euros per km!
  • Take care swimming – the lagoon and protected beaches are safe, but you should avoid open water wherever possible due to the high numbers of sharks.
  • If you want to put your sea legs to good use, try surfing at laid-back St-Leu.
