Cape Town

With the magnificent Table Mountain rising high above, this beautiful city offers everything your heart could desire, from whale-watching to wine-tasting.

One of South Africa’s most important cities – it is known as the Mother City – it was the landing point for the first European colonists, with the arrival of the Dutch in 1652. The city is a mix of colonial and contemporary architecture, with an energetic, innovative spirit, and vibrant food, arts and cultural scenes. Table Mountain is host to some 1,470 floral species, making it a naturalist’s dream destination. There is so much to do, you can easily pass weeks here exploring the city and surrounding area. If you’re here for New Year, the best celebrations happen on 2nd of January. The city centre hosts a huge street party for Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year) with hundreds of performers in brightly-coloured costumes, crazy face-paint and extravagant hats and parasols.

Next destination

  • Take the cable car up Table Mountain – from city to summit, the Cableway takes less than five minutes. The cable car's rotating floor offers all visitors a 360-degree view of the whole city.
  • Visit Robben Island – once the notorious prison where Nelson Mandela and his ANC colleagues were held, it is now a living museum.
  • Take off up the Garden Route – soak up the inspiring scenery on one of the world’s most spectacular coast roads.
  • Explore the wineries – there are over 200 wineries within a day’s drive, the Western Cape’s Winelands is unmissable. With its roots in the 17th Century, the wine industry here is huge, producing some of the world’s finest vintages that are true to the terrain.
  • Cape of Good Hope – the southern-most tip of Africa and one of the most famous nautical landmarks in the world, known for its rocky shores and temperamental waters. Visit in safety on dry land with a day trip around the Cape peninsula.
