Located on the northeastern coast of Brazil, the city of Recife is a welcome stopover for the Oyster World Rally fleet after its Atlantic crossing.
Founded in the 16th century, the city originally developed as a port to serve nearby sugarcane production and is one of Brazil’s oldest settlements. Today, Recife has grown into an exciting gateway for exploration, with plenty to see and do in the city limits and further afield.
Home to one of the world’s largest and most colourful Carnival celebrations, Galo da Madrugada, the parade attracts millions of people with traditional frevo music and cultural floats. A 6.5km parade through the downtown streets, it’s easy to join the celebrations and experience one of Brazil’s highlights.
If you’re looking for a quieter experience, the historic old town of Olinda boasts colourful houses, unique boutiques and local market stalls, along with a rich culinary heritage, local cuisine and street food.
From Recife, there’s an opportunity to explore further afield, with Porto de Galinhas to the south and Joao Pessoa to the north, and access to the Amazon, Iguazu Falls, Sao Paolo and beyond.
