Richard Hadida, chairman of Oyster Yachts on the Joy of Sailing

By Elijah Durojaiye

If you prefer the connection to the elements and sense of adventure sailing yachts offer, you know that Oyster Yachts is a brand to consider for your bluewater voyages. But beyond the poetic buzz words often used to describe why you may want a sailing yacht over a motor yacht, what really brings joy to true sailors who can’t get enough of their vessel that’s mostly powered by the wind?

We had a conversation with Richard Hadida, chairman and owner of Oyster Yachts, about the love of sailing and what Oyster Yachts has to offer passionate sailors like him.

What do you consider to be most rewarding about sailing?

It’s the sense of absolute freedom, and the luxury of time well spent. Sailing can take you to the most remote and beautiful corners of the world, but it also brings you closer to the people who matter most. My family and I have had unforgettable adventures aboard Lush, our Oyster 885, not as tourists, but as explorers in our own floating home.

Sailing is a deeply social and transformative experience. With each edition of the Oyster World Rally, I see how the experience brings people together – owners and their crews forming lifelong friendships as they circumnavigate the globe. It’s more than just a journey; it’s a shared adventure that fosters resilience, builds community and inspires personal growth. For me, it’s that rare blend of escape, connection and discovery that makes sailing truly extraordinary, and keeps me deeply passionate about what I do.

When choosing a yacht for extended cruising or liveaboard adventures, what key features should customers look for, and how does Oyster design with those needs in mind?

For long-distance cruising or living aboard, the yacht needs to do far more than just sail well. She should be safe, self-sufficient, and genuinely livable. You’re looking for performance, but also for a boat that becomes your home away from home.

At Oyster, we design with this philosophy at the core. Our yachts are built with bluewater capabilities at their heart – a robust hull, high freeboards and deep keels all ensure our yachts will cross oceans with confidence. But just as important is the comfort and functionality below deck. We focus on generous, luxurious living spaces, smart stowage solutions, proper insulation and systems that are easy to access, use and maintain over time. These things matter when you’re spending weeks offshore.

From a design perspective, Oyster’s innovative styling, built on over five decades of experience, is instantly recognizable. Our yachts feature the pioneering deck saloon, protected cockpit, wraparound saloon windows, and signature triple vertical Seascape windows, plumb bow, and extended bowsprit. Large Seascape windows bring in natural light and connect you with the ocean. We balance privacy and sociability with layouts designed for real-life cruising with family or crew.

What does the typical journey look like for a new Oyster owner, from placing an order to setting sail? How involved can they be in the customization process?

From the moment a potential owner makes contact with us, we are here for them. We listen to their dreams, experiences and requirements and guide them through our models and options until they choose their dream yacht. Once the order is placed, the journey begins. You’ll have access to training through our Bluewater Academy, meet fellow owners at events like the Oyster Palma Regatta, and even be shown the ropes by those who’ve sailed their Oysters around the world.

The customization process is deeply personal. Each owner is paired with a Project Manager who will work alongside them throughout their entire build process. Our Project Management team are incredibly knowledgeable with extensive sailing experience, often having skippered Oysters themselves. They work together with the clients to scope out everything from future sailing plans to fabric choices and joinery options, to ensure the yacht is exactly to the specification of each owner.

When the yacht is in the water, owners undertake a rigorous handover process with their Project Manager, the commissioning team and our suppliers, to help them familiarize themselves with their new yacht and give them the confidence to head off on their first adventure.

Many people dream of exploring the world by sea. How does Oyster help turn that dream into a practical, achievable lifestyle?

That dream of casting off and discovering the world under sail is something we hear from many of our owners. At Oyster, our goal is to make that not just possible, but truly achievable for anyone with the passion and spirit of adventure.

We begin with the yacht itself: robust, ocean-going vessels designed for long passages and liveaboard comfort. They are built to be sailed easily, to handle serious weather, and to carry you safely and comfortably across any ocean. But making the leap from dreaming to doing takes more than a well-built boat.

That is where our broader ecosystem plays such an important role. Through the Bluewater Academy, we offer expert-led training that gives new owners the skills and confidence they need, from navigation and safety to onboard systems and ocean readiness. We also launched the Oyster Explorers Club, which connects like-minded owners cruising around the world, providing inspiration, knowledge sharing, and mutual support.

And of course, there is the Oyster World Rally, a fully supported circumnavigation that allows owners to experience the world in a truly unique and life-changing way, with full technical support and the camaraderie of a like-minded fleet.

What we are doing is building more than yachts. We are building a community, a pathway, and a support system that helps people turn ambition into reality. I have seen families go from coastal cruising to crossing oceans and changing their lives.

Can you share the strategic vision behind your latest models, such as the Oyster 805, and what they signify about the company's future direction?

The Oyster 805 is a significant step forward in our journey. It reflects a clear vision of what the future of luxury bluewater sailing should look like. With this model, we wanted to deliver the performance and capability of a larger yacht in a more manageable, owner-driven format.

The 805 offers unparalleled interior customization options, allowing owners to tailor every detail to suit their lifestyle, whether it’s a home gym, private office, or snug cabin. She is designed for serious long-distance cruising, with the comfort and refinement expected of a true liveaboard yacht.

At the same time, she stays true to our DNA. Everything that defines an Oyster is there: robust construction, ocean-going pedigree, and thoughtful design that puts the sailor and the sea at the center of the experience. Our future direction is focused on innovation that enhances that experience.

The 805 introduces new levels of volume, natural light and intelligent layouts. It also highlights our continued investment in sustainability, systems integration, and long-term reliability. This model is more than a new launch, it is a clear signal of where Oyster is going forward with purpose and evolving without ever losing sight of what makes our yachts unique.

Oyster's focus has long been on bluewater cruising. How does that influence everything from design decisions to onboard features?

Our DNA is rooted in over 20 million bluewater sailing miles and over 100 circumnavigations. With every mile under an Oyster keel, we learn from the real-world experiences of our owners, crews and team of experts to help refine and evolve our yachts. Every model in our range is capable of sailing safely, anywhere in the world.

Bluewater cruising drives every decision from design choices to build processes. We have invested heavily in our approach to ensure that performance and safety are top priority, and our yachts are hand-crafted from exceptional materials, with every inch showcasing the incomparable skills of our master craftsmen and women.

Our hulls are designed in-house, in collaboration with industry-leading naval architects Humphreys Yacht Design, and are Lloyds Register and DNV-GL certified for their safety of construction. With our latest hull forms, the beam is carried further aft, increasing form stability and utilizing twin rudders, our yachts are both stable and surefooted in lively seas, while remaining light and agile on the helm. No matter the conditions, our owners are confident in the capability of their yachts.

While performance and safety remain priorities, we also pride ourselves on building yachts that retain a high level of luxury and comfort too. The large hull volume and seascape windows create a sense of space and light below decks, and the full-width master cabin aft of the yacht is both generous and luxurious. Our yachts are designed with ample stowage and equipment to provision for extended periods at sea – appliances like a large fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and hot water taps are some of the touches that make for a truly comfortable home away from home, no matter the location.

Tell us a little about the Oyster World Rally initiative. What role do curated experiences like these play in defining the company's identity?

The Oyster World Rally is one of the most meaningful things we do. In fact, my wife Ali, our toddler Harry, and I will be taking part in the next Rally ourselves. It’s not just about sailing around the world, it’s about doing it together. The Rally brings a fleet of like-minded Oyster owners on a 16-month circumnavigation, fully supported by our team from start to finish. We handle the pre-rally training program, logistics at planned destinations, support every step of the way, and the celebratory moments, to name a few.

What makes it so powerful is the community it creates. Owners and participants form lasting friendships, support one another, and share the highs and lows of life at sea. That connection both to the journey and to each other is deeply woven into who we are as a brand. Oyster has always stood for more than just craftsmanship. Experiences like the Rally show we also stand for adventure, togetherness, and the courage to live boldly.

What kind of personalized service or after-sales support can Oyster owners expect throughout their ownership journey?

When we say you’re never alone on an Oyster, we mean it. Buying an Oyster is much more than ownership, it’s a membership to our family of like-minded, passionate sailors who are supported throughout their time onboard.

Our After Sales team has often been referred to as the best in the business by owners, and we support Oyster yachts of all ages and sizes, wherever they are in the world. From Technical Support advice given by our experienced technicians to sourcing and delivering parts to the remotest areas of the planet through After Sales, we have supported over 500 yachts in the last five years, and continue to do so every day.

We will always strive to support our yacht owners with their questions, concerns and queries, no matter what stage of their ownership journey they are at. It’s one of the things that sets us apart from our competitors in the market.
