An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and proactive individual to assist the Joinery Manager in the joinery department, and to ensure the smooth running of the workshop. You will lead the team of employees and ensure that the construction of the joinery is maintained to the required Oyster standard.

The Bench Joiner Team Leader will report directly to the lead Joinery Manager in Southampton

Main Responsibilities of the Bench Joiner Team Leader Role

  • To assist the Joinery Manager with day to day running of the workshop and perform management duties when the Joinery Manager is absent or out of office.
  • Working closely with the CNC / Sawmill departments and to resolve any issues that can arise.
  • Working closely with the Design department to ensure smooth running of the workshop.
  • Provide training support and guidance to the apprentices with their tasks in the workshop.
  • Provide encouragement to team members, including communicating team goals and identifying areas for new training.
  • Answer team member questions, help with team member problems and oversee team member work for quality via the marking up and reassembly process and report back any issues that arise to maintain the required Oyster standard of all furniture.
  • Be actively involved with the performance reviews of all team members in conjunction with the Joinery Manager. Provide accurate feedback and continually identify possible areas of improvement.
  • To assist in the daily lockup of the Joinery Department if required.

The Person


  • Robust boatbuilding construction knowledge
  • Relevant City & Guilds Qualification or equivalent
  • Excellent communication skills as well as ability to be self-motivated to keep up to date with new technologies
  • Proven track record of motivating and developing others


  • Experience of managing a fast-paced department
  • Previous experience of working with Oyster Yachts
